HOW THE STORY OF LOVE STARTED...
After seeing young single guys searching for kitchen oil to use as a massage oil at a big Hollywood Hills party the two friends Joe Bolstadt and Hal Hauser came up with the idea of creating a massage oil. They decided to call it ‘’Love Oil’’. One of the guys was our own Joe who is still the CEO.
During a visit to The Bodhi Tree bookstore in West Hollywood Joe and Hal came across a book called The Kama Sutra of Vatsayayana. The book was saying the same things that Joe and Hall were thinking: the importance of the role of intimacy in achieving sexual pleasure between loving partners.
And so they decided to call their brand Kama Sutra.
The development of the first product: Oil of Love
The first batch of 5,000 Oils of Love
After searching for a while Joe and Hal found a small lab in South Central, Los Angeles who was to run their first batch of 5,000 Oils of Love. While the chemist was developing the formula he came across something what appeared to him as a problem: the tendency of the ingredient to become warm. However, it was the game changer for the Oil of Love.
Kama Sutras very first trade show was in 1972 at The Biltmore Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. The trade show led to a great success and *KA-CHING!* Kama Sutra was on its way.
Kama Sutra started in the specialty shops of the 60s and 70’s and evolved into the ‘’adult’’ world in the 80’s and 90’s.
The Kama Sutra company entered Europe for the first time.
In 2013 the Kama Sutra company decided to re-brand its products. Starting with the packages, the brand re-designed the product packages with more attracting and colorful prints as they used to be all green.
Drastic changes in European distribution in the light of the relaunch in Europe. Kama Sutra aims to distribute its products selectively in the mainstream sales channel.
The Kama Sutra company opens its European office in the Netherlands.
